During the last summer transfer window there were multiple rumours about Marcos Acuna being of interest to Aston Villa.
The story went that Monchi had identified the player from his former club and was very keen to bring him to Birmingham to work under Unai Emery.
At the time, the player himself was also thought to be very keen but Sevilla were in chaos and blocked the transfer from happening. That was despite their finances needing the boost a transfer fee for Acuna would have brought, so it all seemed quite odd.
Acuna himself has granted an interview to ABC Sevilla and was asked directly whether the Aston Villa claims were simply rumours or whether there was something more concrete behind them.
The player is clearly annoyed and understandably a little bitter about what happened, and feels a personal feud got in the way of his big move to the Premier League.
ABC Sevilla quote Acuna as saying: “They were not rumours, Sevilla had an important offer that, due to personal reasons of the president and Monchi, did not happen, and I was the one affected. I think I didn’t deserve it because a good amount of money would have come in, but that’s over and I’m focused now on the remaining matches.”
The 32-year-old left back has just over a year left on his current contract, he’s made 21 appearances this season after being held back by a couple of injuries.
Asked if he wants a change of scenery this summer, Acuna said: “I have a contract until 2025, but I don’t know. First I have to accumulate minutes, play games and then see what’s next.”
