Girona are set to complete the signing of Álex Moreno from Aston Villa and will announce his arrival in the coming hours.

That’s according to Marca who say the Spanish club have moved quickly to replace Miguel Gutiérrez after he departed just a day ago.

The newspaper reports that Girona have secured a deal for Moreno with Aston Villa, although there is no mention of the fee involved.

The Spanish club’s coffers have been bolstered though, with Gutiérrez leaving €9m in the bank following his departure.

Moreno spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest and is not a part of Aston Villa’s plans moving forwards, despite them paying €13.5m to sign him from Real Betis in 2023 January transfer window.

The move will be a return to Spain for Moreno, who previously played for Betis, Mallorca and Rayo Vallecano. He also had a loan spell at Elche.

The 32-year-old is keen to return to Spain, and the final details are being worked on. According to Marca it remains to be seen whether he signs on a permanent basis on a two-year deal or on loan in which Girona cover a large part of his salary.

He will reunite with manager Míchel Sánchez, who he previously played under at Rayo Vallecano, where they secured promotion to the first division in 2018.
