Back in February, Middlesbrough let Lukas Engel join FC Cincinnati on loan until the end of this year.

The Dane was a regular for the MLS side and played 3,346 minutes from 41 matches. He mainly operated as a left wing-back and at times as a left-back and a centre-back.

Bold report FC Cincinnati have been pleased with the Middlesbrough owned player’s displays.

They have already shown their desire to extend the 26-year-old’s stay beyond his loan spell.

Cincinnati have carried out negotiations with Kim Hellberg’s side to explore the possibility of buying him. The fullback’s contract with the Championship side runs down in 2027 and Transfermarkt currently values him at €2.5m.

It’s claimed Boro failed to reach an agreement with the American club, without providing any explanation. Therefore, Engel is set to return to the Riverside Stadium.

According to the outlet, the player is unlikely to be part of Hellberg’s plans during the second half of the season.

Bold reports ‘several other alternatives are being worked on’ for him in the winter market. In short, Middlesbrough could send Engel on loan or decide to sell him in January.

Middlesbrough are currently second in the Championship and new manager Hellberg has been backed for Boro success.
