A move to Manchester United is a childhood dream for many footballers, although as careers go on that dream obviously fades for the vast majority.
Being sent on loan from Burnley to Besiktas doesn’t exactly shout that a player is on the road to Old Trafford, but for Wout Weghorst that was his reality.
At the time Manchester United’s interest arose he’d been doing well during his loan at Besiktas and had a great relationship with the fans. Despite that, he didn’t mind upsetting those supporters by pushing a loan cancellation through and then moving to the Premier League club on a temporary deal.
That transfer wasn’t made permanent and Weghorst spent last season at Hoffenheim, also on loan. Now he’s set to move on a permanent basis and speaking to Kicker he flirted over a move to Ajax and return to the Netherlands this summer.
As part of the chat, Weghorst was obviously asked about his Manchester United experience and he’s clearly still thrilled that it happened.
Kicker quote the big striker as saying: “An absolute world club, another dream come true. It was successful, even if I didn’t score many goals. But we came third and won the League Cup. I look back fondly on this six-month period.”
