A couple of weeks ago, Thilo Kehrer was loaned by West Ham United to AS Monaco.
The defender had been getting little playing time with the Hammers, and ended up agreeing to move to the French side until the end of the season.
Kehrer was today interviewed by RMC Sport in France, and talked about the process which took him to Monaco.
Speaking of the reasons he’d lost prominence at West Ham, he claims it was all down to David Moyes’ decisions.
“I left for West Ham that summer and the first year went very well: I got used to the Premier League, to the club and I played a lot of games.
“This season, the West Ham coach changed his style of team selection and play, and as a result I was no longer the first choice. I found myself with less playing time. That’s why I decided to try something new, and I’m delighted to have found AS Monaco. We had some good conversations and we talked things through. It’s a great club with a project that’s very interesting for me.”
West Ham spent €12m to sign Kehrer from PSG in 2022. In his first season at the club, he made 38 appearances.
This season, though, he only had 12 appearances for the Hammers, and was only used in the Premier League in the final minutes of games, making it clear that the manager had a completely new opinion about his place in the team.
AS Monaco now have a buying option over him, so Kehrer may not fulfil the contract he has with West Ham until 2026. Now it’s time to perform in Ligue 1 and have the options he wants for the future.
