Goalkeeper Mike Penders has revealed he turned down Paris Saint Germain to sign for Chelsea this summer.
The youngster has been speaking to Sporza, relayed by Voetbal Primeur, regarding his excitement about the move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Penders is one of many players to be signed by Chelsea this summer, joining them in a €20m deal from KRC Genk.
The highly rated goalkeeper is very much considered one for the future, with Chelsea electing to send the goalkeeper back on loan to Genk for the remainder of this season.
That is partly because there are currently five goalkeepers in the Chelsea squad, with Roberto Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, Marcus Bettinelli and Lucas Bergstrom competing for places.
It is also part of the sporting plan for the youngster, who has been sent back to Genk to be their number of for the season and continue his development away from Stamford Bridge.
Given the high turnover and seemingly endless transfers at Chelsea at this moment in time, some have questioned why the youngster would want to make the move. But he’s not questioning it, and instead says he chose Chelsea over PSG because of the plan they presented to him.
“I am very happy of course,” he said.
“This is a dream for everyone who ever starts playing football. Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in England. It is a great honour to be part of it soon.
“PSG also showed interest for a while, but yes… Chelsea pushed the hardest and had the best sporting plan for me. So, I went for it.”
