Earlier this month, Andi Zeqiri left Brighton & Hove Albion and made a permanent switch to KRC Genk.
The Seagulls took the striker from Swiss side Lausanne-Sport in 2020 and he made 12 appearances in his debut season at The Amex. In the last two seasons, Brighton sent him out on loan to FC Augsburg and FC Basel.
Speaking to Het Belang van Limburg, the 24-year-old has admitted that lack of stability is why he decided to leave Brighton permanently.
The Switzerland international also believes Brighton’s decision to send him out on loan in the last two years was the reason why he was left out of the squad for the World Cup.
“Of course, it was a disappointment not to be there in Qatar. On the other hand, I also know why I dropped out,” he said.
“I played at four different clubs in recent years. Via Lausanne I ended up at Brighton, who loaned me to Augsburg and Basel. I need stability, that’s why I’m happy I could make a permanent transfer to Genk. This is the ideal club for me to take the next big step in my career.”
Prior to joining Brighton three years ago, the frontman had several options to pick from, and he has now explained what convinced him to sign for the Seagulls.
“After my top season at Lausanne, where I scored 17 goals and provided 8 assists in the Swiss second division during the corona season at the age of 20, I had to choose the teams. Brighton had a clear plan, the Premier League also appealed to me,” Zeqiri explained.
“I still can’t say a bad word about the club. However, it was personally bad for me that they suddenly took enormous steps in terms of sports. That made the step I had to take even bigger.”
During his time at the Premier League side, Zeqiri played with former Genk star Leandro Trossard.
The Swiss admitted the current Arsenal player had only positive things to say about the Jupiler Pro League side.
