PSV Eindhoven are set to reward Cody Gakpo with a new contract and an improved wage after he turned down a deadline day move to Leeds United.
That’s according to Eindhovens Dagblad, relayed by Voetbal Primeur, who say the forward will receive a ‘major salary upgrade’.
They explain that Gakpo, who rejected a late offer from Leeds to team up with Jesse Marsch, is currently tied to the Dutch club until 2026 meaning there is no need for a new contract.
However, PSV want to reward him for his loyalty and, like they did with Ibrahim Sangare earlier his summer, are planning to offer him ‘strongly improved conditions’ in his current deal.
Like the midfielder, the new deal will see Gakpo made one of ‘the absolute top earners in the Eredivisie’ and the Dutch side are hoping to announce the deal soon.
It would be the second major boost for them this summer after managing to keep Sangare, who was also a target for Premier League clubs.
He too rejected the lure of England for another year in the Netherlands and was rewarded with an improved deal, a trick PSV will now repeat with Gakpo as thanks for rejecting Leeds on deadline day.
