Striker Andi Zeqiri has revealed he spoke to Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard regarding Genk before sealing a move from Brighton yesterday.
The striker has been speaking to the club’s official channels, relayed by Voetbal Primeur, regarding his move after it was completed on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old joined the Belgian side in a €2.5m deal yesterday following months of speculation about his future at Brighton.
He has been with them since joining in October 2020 but has spent the last few years out on loan, first at Augsburg and then FC Basel in his native Switzerland.
He returned to Brighton this summer but was not a part of their plans moving forwards and, after seeing the possibility of a return to Basel not happen, has now elected to move to Genk.
They’re a club known by most, of course, thanks to their size and success in Belgium but it seems Zeqiri was keen to get a more in-depth review and so sought out former teammate Trossard at Arsenal for advice.
He started his career at Genk and managed 39 goals and 21 assists for the club in 120 games before his move to Brighton in 2019 and then eventual switch to Arsenal in January this year and it seems he was more than happy to praise his old club when asked.
“Logically, KRC Genk is a club with an enormous history,” he said.
“Some of the best players on European fields have passed through Genk. The ambition shines through here.
“They want to compete for the title, and they play European football. I know Leandro Trossard from Brighton. He told me a lot of good things about the club. I’m eager to get started.”
