Manchester United have been credited with an interest in Sporting star Viktor Gyökeres.
The striker arrived at the club from Coventry City in July 2023 and excelled under Rúben Amorim’s orders. To put it in context, he managed 66 goals and 18 assists from 68 games of which 23 goals and four assists are from this season.
Amorim took charge at Manchester United earlier this week. The Red Devils were named as one of Gyökeres’ interested parties before the manager’s arrival from Sporting and continue to be linked.
Earlier this month, Record stated Manchester United are guaranteed to make an approach for the Sweden international. His compatriots, Jonas Olsson and Daniel Nannskog, have backed him to join Amorim at Old Trafford.
Fotbollskanalen had a chat with the Lions frontman, who claims he’s not thinking about leaving Sporting in January.
Gyökeres expressed his disappointment over Amorim’s exit from the Portuguese club, considering the impact the manager has had on him.
“It’s very sad that he’s leaving, but of course we understand his decision,” he said.
“He has of course meant a lot [to me] considering that he gave me that chance and that he made me develop so much. Now we look forward to working with the new coach.”
It was no surprise to see the former Brighton & Hove Albion man being informed about the claims of Amorim wanting him at Manchester United.
“He [Amorim] probably has some strikers there already, so we’ll see,” Gyökeres explained
When quizzed if the new Red Devils manager has asked him, he added: “No, he hasn’t. It’s fun but nothing I attach any importance to because it’s talk and nothing concrete.”
The Swede has also explained one of the important conditions for him to join a new club.
“That you get an important role and that you get to play. That’s the most important thing. There are other things that also need to be in place, but I’ll take it when it comes,” the Sporting player said.
