Inter Milan defender Francesco Acerbi has revealed he turned down the chance to join Leicester City earlier in his career.
He’s been speaking to the official Serie A channel, relayed by Sassuolo News, about his career so far and where it might have taken him if things had gone differently.
The 35-year-old is currently starring for Inter Milan, having joined them on loan from Lazio in the summer until the end of the season.
They are the latest in a long line of Italian clubs he’s played for in his career to date, having started at Pavia before turning out for the likes of Reggina, Genoa, Chievo Verona, AC Milan, Sassuolo and Lazio.
He’s never moved outside of Serie A, a rare occurrence in the modern game in which players move between leagues on a regular basis.
It appears he did have the opportunity, though, with Claudio Ranieri calling him to try and tempt him to join his project Leicester.
“When I was at Sassuolo, Ranieri called me to go to Leicester,” he said.
“Important teams called me, but I always said no because the Squinzi family has always been close to me. I have so much gratitude in them.”
