Switzerland midfielder Remo Freuler has admitted he doesn’t know what went wrong for him at Nottingham Forest, as manager Steve Cooper didn’t explain it to him.
The midfielder has been speaking to Corriere dello Sport after being unveiled by new club Bologna, who he joined at the end of the transfer window.
He spent last season with Nottingham Forest, arriving as part of their major summer spending following promotion from the Championship.
He was a regular for the club as they battled to stay in the Premier League, making 33 appearances in all competitions across the campaign.
He spend the end of the season sat on the bench, though, with Cooper electing not to use him for Nottingham Forest’s final six games of the season.
That was a dramatic change for the Switzerland international, who had been a regular up to that point, and he says he still doesn’t know what caused it.
“Before he had also given me the captain’s armband. I spoke to him, but he couldn’t tell me what I had done wrong and so we remained halfway,” he said when asked on the subject.
It was that break between player and manager which seemingly led to Freuler’s departure and eventual arrival at Bologna.
That was a deal which took a while to come to fruition, with the midfielder eventually arriving on loan from Nottingham Forest on deadline day.
It was one of several last gasp moves from Forest at the end of the window, with them by far the busiest side in England in terms of comings and goings.
That’s not how Freuler would have done things, though, with him admitting he had wanted his exit sorted long before that.
“Of course, I hoped that the transfer would be closed sooner,” he added.
“I would have liked to come straight away, but I knew I had to be patient because negotiations are always long.”
