AS Roma are in the picture to sign Sunderland’s Dan Neil in the winter market, according to ASRomaLive.it.

Last season, the midfielder was a regular for the Black Cats and was even Régis Le Bris’ captain. He played 4,285 minutes from 48 matches and was a key part of the Sunderland squad that secured promotion to the top flight.

The 23-year-old’s situation at Sunderland has changed this season and he’s played only two minutes from two Premier League matches. He also made another appearance in the EFL Cup.

He hasn’t featured since coming off the bench in Sunderland’s win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on October 18th. According to the report, Neil is ‘ready to change’ clubs in January.

Neil has over seven months left on his contract. It’s claimed Sunderland sporting director Florent Ghisolfi hasn’t yet started negotiations for the renewal.

Ghisolfi’s decision not to take this step means the English club will only be able to earn a ‘modest fee’ if Neil is sold in January. This may favour the Serie A side to sign the player, who is said to be their long-term target.

Journalist Angelo Papi also shares an update on Roma’s interest in the Sunderland player on ASRomaLive.it’s Twitch channel.

“I’m not saying Roma will sign him, but I can confirm that he’s one of Roma’s objectives and that he can leave because he hardly ever plays,” he said.
