Chelsea chased Malo Gusto for much of the January transfer window, finally agreeing a deal with Lyon towards the end of the market.
Jean-Michel Aulas, Lyon’s well known and outspoken president, said midway through the window that Gusto would still be at the club when the market closed.
Some saw that as him being totally against a sale, but Aulas, as usual, used his words carefully and left open the option of a club buying the defender and loaning him back for the remainder of the season.
That’s what Chelsea managed to agree with the Ligue 1 side, and now they’ll hope Gusto can shine in French football, progress a little, and be as ready as possible when he finally shows up at Stamford Bridge.
FootMercato quote him as saying: “The transfer to Chelsea was a bit last minute, although I had been talking to them for some time. It was a good proposal, with a good project behind it, that’s what influenced me on this choice. We are not where we should be! There is always a little apprehension. Chelsea is a very big club, I’m changing countries. But when I sign, I know what to expect, and I sign to play and win.”
Gusto was asked about his aspirations for the France national team, and whilst he made it clear that’s an aim of his, he also said Didier Deschamps has never been in contact.
