Manchester City’s need to bolster their left-back position for the new season has increased further after they allowed Oleksandr Zinchenko to seal a move to Arsenal last month.

The Citizens identified Marc Cucurella as their main target, but a potential deal was made difficult because of their refusal to meet Brighton & Hove Albion’s demands.

This has seen Manchester City look for alternatives in the transfer market and among them is Benfica’s Alejandro Grimaldo.

Friday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo explains the 26-year-old has lived a ‘strange’ window. The defender’s contract expires in 2023 and he ‘would be delighted to make a leap’ to an ‘elite team’. The Premier League winners would fit this bill.

It’s claimed the Spaniard doesn’t lack teams that follow him as the list includes Manchester City, Barcelona, Sevilla and a few more clubs. So far, nothing has materialised.

With City looking for a new left-back, Mundo add the ‘most feasible option’ for Grimaldo is possibly ending up at the Etihad. The player, who came up through Barcelona’s academy, is aware of Pep Guardiola’s philosophy and his playing style.

The newspaper suggests the Benfica fullback is ‘one of the best placed to reinforce’ the English champions’ defence. It needs to be seen how this case will end up, especially with Grimaldo open to joining a top club this summer.
