Coventry City star Viktor Gyökeres has an offer from Everton on the table, but currently prefers a move to Sporting Club de Portugal.
That’s according to A Bola, who say the Lions won’t give up on the transfer and Everton may need to work harder if they are to win the race.
The newspaper explains that Sporting are putting all of their focus on getting Gyökeres this summer before focusing on other targets, namely a defensive midfielder and a right winger.
They currently have two aspects in their favour, the willingness of the player himself, who is ‘very enthusiastic’ about the idea of the move after a conversation with Ruben Amorim, and the financial leeway to satisfy Coventry’s demands for their star man.
They’re now pushing to try and get a deal over the line, particularly as Gyökeres has ‘other offers in hand’ from Everton and Brighton, who ‘continue in the race’ for striker’s signature.
Sporting believe that Gyökeres is ‘close to being convinced’ on the move to Portugal and their attention is now focused on reaching an agreement with Coventry, who are demanding €20m.
That’s a figure Sporting can afford but would prefer not to pay if they don’t have to given their limited funds.
The Portuguese side are yet to make an official proposal and negotiations behind the scenes are expected to continue for a few more days as the player is focused on international duty with Sweden.
That gives Everton a chance to get in and try to turn things around in their favour, but they’ll have to be quick as the growing belief in Portugal is that Gyökeres will be joining Sporting and not the Toffees.
