Thibaut Courtois is currently with Belgium, preparing for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The goalkeeper’s future at Chelsea still remains uncertain as he has one year left on his current deal at Stamford Bridge.
Belgium publication Het Laatste Nieuws explain the Blues wanted to tie the former Atletico Madrid star to a new deal. The FA Cup winners were ready to offer Courtois a weekly salary of €220,000-a-week, which it’s stated would have made him the highest paid goalkeeper in the world.
However, Courtois rejected the offer from the west London club in January. Instead, the Chelsea stopper wants to keep his options open and has set his sights on returning to La Liga this summer. Courtios’ two children are in Madrid and that is why he wants to move back there.
The Belgium international even had a meeting with Paris Saint-Germain in London, something which has been repeated claimed by the French media. However, PSG have decided to sign Gianluigi Buffon on a free transfer, which has ended Courtois’ chances of moving to France.
Liverpool were rumoured to be interested in the player, but HLN dismiss that. Chelsea have not yet given the “green light” to allow him to leave the club this summer and will only consider it there’s no renewal, and a club puts forward a ‘tempting proposal’.
Otherwise, they’ll keep Courtois to his contract despite the risk of losing him on a free transfer.
