Wout Weghorst has “no business” playing for Manchester United, with it doubtful their recent good run was down to him being in the side.
The giant striker joined Manchester United on loan from Burnley in the January transfer window, ending a similar deal at Besiktas to make the move Old Trafford.
He arrived at the club as a direct replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who was released just before the World Cup after a falling out with the club and Erik ten Hag in particular.
Many questioned the decision to sign the Dutchman, believing that the 30-year-old was nowhere near good enough to play for a club like Manchester United.
They cited his poor return while at Burnley last season, where he managed two goals and three assists in 20 games after arriving in January to aid them in their fight against relegation.
He’s struggled in a similar fashion at United, scoring just once in 14 games so far, as well as providing three assists.
That was being overlooked amid a superb run of form for Ten Hag’s side, though, which had seen them go 11 games unbeaten and win the Carabao Cup before the 7-0 defeat to Liverpool.
Weghorst was virtually anonymous in that defeat before being replaced in the 58th minute by Alejandro Garnacho and Derksen was less than impressed, questioning why he’s at the club.
“I’ve been watching and then I think: Weghorst, you really have no business at this level,” he told Vandaag Inside, relayed by FC Update.
“I don’t know what Erik wants with him. If you win, then you can say it works with him.
“Whether that’s (the recent run) down to Weghorst… I can’t imagine it. At Burnley he never performed anything.”
