Memphis Depay has played less than 150 minutes for Barcelona this season, with the Dutchman struggling with injuries. He’s expected to be fit to take part for the Netherlands at the Qatar World Cup, and Monday’s edition of Sport reports his club hope that can be a transfer showcase for him.
Barca told Depay he could leave the club during the summer and he was even given the chance to exit the Camp Nou as a free agent. Not wanting to drop down in level too much, Depay ‘negotiated’ with Chelsea and Juventus before ultimately deciding he wanted to stay where he was and fight for a place.
Injuries have meant that hasn’t been possible and there’s now a desire to part ways in the winter. The assumption would be that any interested clubs would again want a free transfer, especially given the player’s contract expires at the end of the current season.
To get Chelsea’s attention, Depay would surely have to start for the Netherlands in Qatar and impress for Louis van Gaal’s side in the competition. Then he could be an option again for the Blues as they look to solve their difficulties this season.
