Anderlecht midfielder Majeed Ashimeru has confirmed that Vincent Kompany wanted to sign him for Burnley in the summer and has left the door open to a move in future.
Kompany spent the summer reshaping the squad he inherited from Sean Dyche, with a particular focus on Belgium after his time working there as Anderlecht coach.
He was particularly keen to sign players from his former club but ultimately Josh Cullen was the only one to make the move alongside him.
There were efforts to sign some others, though, with Ashimeru and Bart Verbruggen both linked throughout the summer.
Ultimately deals could not be done for either as Anderlecht elected to keep their players and Burnley turned their focus elsewhere.
The Clarets are likely to be busy in January once again as they look to build on a strong start to the season that has them sitting at the top of the Championship.
Ashimeru could be a target once again and he’s left the door open to a move in his latest comments about the interest.
“I came to Anderlecht because of Kompany,” Voetbal Niuews report him saying.
“When I played at Salzburg, I spoke to him, and it is because of him that I came to RSCA. When he left for Burnley, he wanted to take me with him.
“However, the transfer did not go through and that is now behind me. I had a very good relationship with Kompany and who knows what the future will bring.”
