With the Portuguese media today full of stories about Tottenham Hotspur’s bid for Porto star Luis Diaz, it’s quite interesting that all of the articles mention another club as well.
That’s Liverpool FC.
It’s common belief in the country that despite Spurs’ efforts to sign the winger, the Reds can’t be thrown out of the race, as their old interest in the player still leaves them well positioned for the signing.
So as several sources mention the Anfield side, we’ll explain what each one is saying.
Starting with newspaper Record, they say Diaz ‘resists’ Tottenham’s offer, it’s claimed that the player considers Liverpool to be ‘on another level’, therefore the project would be ‘more seductive’.
That’s something similar, even with the same words, to what A Bola writes. They say the player doesn’t feel ‘particularly seduced’ by Spurs, as he feels like he could get to a ‘superior level’, given he’s been linked to the Reds and Manchester United.
Liverpool’s interest in Diaz is highlighted by Jornal de Notícias, who says they ‘do not give up’ on the chase. The problem is that since Diaz can’t play in the Champions League for them this season, that makes his value less for them, however, a summer move is likelier anyway.
The Reds are labelled the ‘main adversary’ for Tottenham by newspaper Correio da Manhã as well, with the outlet claiming the coming days will be decisive for the player’s future.
What seems clear is that Diaz is in no hurry for the move, and that’s something covered by local Porto newspaper O Jogo. They say the winger is ‘not very interested in leaving at this moment’, and is focused on helping them to get to the title.
They claim he’d rather wait for the summer knowing that other English sides, including Liverpool, could come for him. Partly because leaving the Champions League for a club like Tottenham, who are not even featuring in the Conference League now, is not in his ambitions.
