AC Milan want to strengthen their defence by adding Tottenham Hotspur’s Emerson Royal to their squad.
On Wednesday, the Serie A side had a new meeting with Spurs over signing the right-back. Earlier today, claims from the Italian media said the gap in valuation between Milan and Tottenham is reducing, but the two clubs haven’t yet found an agreement.
MilanLive.it interviewed journalist Andersinho Marques, who writes for Italy’s Sport Mediaset and Brazil’s Rede 98, to get an insight about the Tottenham man.
According to Marques, the deal to take the 25-year-old to the San Siro is “getting closer” and the player is keen to have a fresh start in Serie A.
A section of the Italian club’s supporters have expressed their concerns over the potential arrival of Emerson, and the journalist says he knows the reason behind it.
The Brazilian joined Spurs in 2021, and made 101 appearances in all competitions. Last season, Ange Postecoglou used him across the backline, and the journalist feels a move to Milan can help Emerson relaunch his career.
When asked about the fullback’s journey so far, Marques explained: “Emerson started his career in Ponte Preta’s youth sector before moving to Atlético Mineiro.”
“After attracting attention with his performances in Brazil, he was bought by Barcelona in 2019, although he spent much of it on loan at Betis. In 2021, he was sold to Tottenham, where, however, he failed to establish himself as a regular starter. He will try to relaunch himself in Serie A.”
Marques has encouraged the South American to leave Tottenham for Milan this summer.
“He was considered a promising young man with considerable potential. However, his career did not meet expectations. At Tottenham, he alternated good performances with moments of decline. His offensive game, combined with some defensive shortcomings, has raised questions about his true potential,” the journalist added.
“Now, the transfer to Milan represents an important opportunity to relaunch himself, but it remains to be seen how he will adapt to Italian football and the expectations of the Rossoneri club.”
