Tottenham’s move for Marcus Thuram could open the door for Steven Bergwijn to return to Ajax this summer.

That’s according to the De Telegraaf’s Kick-Off podcast, who maintain the Dutch side are keen on bringing Bergwijn back to the club.

Reports from France yesterday indicated Tottenham are closing in on a deal for Thuram, who has impressed with Borussia Monchengladbach again this season.

If he were to arrive at the club, it would put him in direct competition with Bergwijn, who has struggled to establish himself since arriving in January last year.

That may only be a short competition, though, with De Telegraaf believing that Thuram could be a replacement rather than an alternative to Bergwijn.

They reported at the end of May that Ajax were keen on a deal to bring Bergwijn back, with Mike Verweij saying this at the time: “Ajax is in the market for Bergwijn, but I think he is very expensive. If he is allowed to leave Spurs. Maybe Ajax will end up with a cheaper alternative, but they will certainly try to get Bergwijn.”

That was followed up by Valentijn Driessen, who stated that the Amsterdam giants were hoping to do a deal worth around €15m.

Things are seemingly in motion, then, although it all rests on Thuram’s arrival at Tottenham first.
