Yoan Wissa has ‘reached a milestone’ with his move to Newcastle United this summer, with the move an obvious one after his performances at Brentford.

That’s according to Congo coach Sébastien Desabre, speaking to Africa Foot, who believes the move to Newcastle was to be expected this summer.

Wissa completed a €57.7m move to Newcastle on deadline day of the summer transfer window after spending the summer on strike looking to get out of Brentford.

He had made it clear that he wanted to follow Bryan Mbeumo out of the door after four years with the Bees in which he scored 49 goals and registered 13 assists in 147 games. That followed his time at Lorient, where he managed 37 goals and 16 assists in 128 games.

It’s been a career of upward trajectory for the 29-year-old, who also has five goals in 27 games for Congo after making his debut for them in 2020.

He’ll be hoping to maintain his rise in the North East with Newcastle, and Desabre will be watching, after admitting the move was almost inevitable as far as he was concerned.

“With his performances at Brentford, especially in 2024/25, it was to be expected that bigger clubs would be interested in him,” he said.

“It took time between Brentford and the Magpies, which is understandable given the transfer fee. Newcastle is a club with deep pockets, big ambitions, and a Champions League contender.

“After Lorient and Brentford, he’s just reached a milestone. Yoane is a very interesting player, explosive, fast, with the ability to fade into the background and cause more damage at the back. He’s also adept in front of goal.”
