If you’ve been keeping track since the summer transfer window, you’ll know that Calvin Bassey has not been having a good time of things since swapping Rangers, now managed by Michael Beale, for Ajax in the summer.
The defender departed Rangers and Ibrox in a €23m deal for the Dutch giants in the summer as they sought out a replacement for Lisandro Martinez, who had joined Manchester United.
He arrived at the Amsterdam ArenA with a growing reputation after his performances for Rangers since arriving in 2020, shining in the Europa League in particular.
He’s struggled to replicate that in the Netherlands, though, with a series of poor performances seeing him criticised regularly and several calling for him to be sold post haste.
That has been the case again at the beginning of this year, but he has managed to start impressing, putting in solid performances as a centre-back and even earning something of a reprieve from the criticism.
That has continued today after Ajax’s 0-0 draw with Union Berlin last night, with journalist Valentijn Driessen singling out the former Rangers man for praise in his analysis today.
“Offensively, Ajax did not present anything,” Soccer News report him saying.
“That Calvin Bassey, along with goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli, was the best in the Amsterdam side tells the story.”
