Villarreal’s Ben Brereton Díaz is set to join Southampton, according to multiple reports from Spain.
Monday’s edition of AS claims the La Liga side will soon raise €33m, of which €8m will be from the 25-year-old’s move to St Mary’s.
It’s claimed the Chile international is now ‘finalising his arrival’ at Southampton.
This is backed up by Mundo Deportivo, who state the forward is ‘very close’ to joining the Saints. They add Russell Martin’s side and the La Liga side are close to finalising the deal for €8m.
Ben Brereton Díaz joined the Yellow Submarine on a free transfer in July 2023. He failed to score a goal or register an assist from 20 games for Villarreal.
He was sent on loan to Sheffield United in January, and will again return to England, to seal a move to Southampton.
Online, AS provide more information on the operation to take him to the Premier League side. The South American returned to the Spanish club after a loan spell with the Blades, and was well aware there’d be no future for him under Marcelino García Toral.
This convinced Ben Brereton Díaz to listen to offers, and the one made by Southampton ‘satisfies him the most and also Villarreal’. The English club are now finalising the deal with Villarreal, to get the signing over the line.
