A couple of days ago, we covered comments from former West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna’s interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, in which the Italian had spoken about his interest in a potential return to the Serie A.
It seems as if a move back to homeland could materialise this summer. The veteran centre-back’s contract at West Ham ran out at the end of last season and he is now a free agent.
There is now interest in him from Italy, with Corriere dello Sport reporting about the possibility of Empoli coming forward for the ex-Juventus man.
The Azzurri are considering bolstering their backline and see Ogbonna as a potential option. It is mentioned that the idea of signing the player ‘teases’ them.
Ogbonna, who won the Conference League with West Ham in 2023, is ‘evaluating the best solution’ for his future, together with his entourage.
But given the fact that the former Italy international has spoken publicly about a willingness to return to Serie A, the possibility of a move to Empoli could present a good opportunity for him. He has previously had stints at Torino, Crotone and Juve.
