Rasmus Hojlund didn’t want to leave Manchester United this summer. But the arrival of Benjamin Sesko, and others, convinced him to depart.
That’s according to La Repubblica, relayed by Area Napoli, who say the striker had intended to remain at Manchester United this season.
Hojlund is spending the season on loan at Napoli. He joined them towards the end of the summer transfer window, after months of speculation about his future at Old Trafford.
Reports had made it clear that he was not a part of Ruben Amorim’s long-term plans. The Portuguese coach then spent the window changing up his forward line with additions such as Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Benjamin Sesko was then added to the duo in a €76.5m deal from RB Leipzig. They are expected to be Manchester United’s front three for the forseeable future.
It seems Hojlund was certainly convinced of that fact, changing his mind on a transfer once he saw Sesko come through the door.
“(Napoli) sporting director (Giovanni) Manna tried immediately, but the Dane preferred to wait,” La Repubblica are quoted as saying about the Manchester United striker.
“(Ruben) Amorim then brought about yet another revolution in attack by acquiring Mbeumo from Brentford, but above all Sesko, for €85 million.
“At that point, Hojlund realized he needed a change of scenery. He chose Maradona because Napoli had returned forcefully to the Dane after Lukaku’s injury.”
So far, the move to Italy has worked out. Hojlund has four goals in six games in all competitions for Napoli since arriving. He’s also back in form for Denmark, with four goals in his last three game, three of those coming in the last international break.
