On October 20th, Barcelona confirmed a handful of their players had agreed renewals at the Camp Nou and Marc-André ter Stegen was among them. The goalkeeper’s new deal lasts until 2025, and includes a €500m release clause.
According to Sport, the 28-year-old is one of the pillars at the club, despite ‘the fact that he considered’ leaving.
Manchester City were the main club who showed interest in the German in the past.
After the Citizens appointed Pep Guardiola in 2016, the former Bayern Munich manager wanted to bring the keeper to the Etihad.
Having arrived from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, Ter Stegen won the treble with the Spanish giants in his first season. However, he was reduced to limited playing time as former Barca manager Luis Enrique then preferred Claudio Bravo in the league matches.
Sport states the La Liga side were ‘about to get a scare’ because Ter Stegen ‘did not see with bad eyes’ the possibility of joining City.
This has been revealed by Luis Martín and Pol Ballús, in their book, ‘Cuaderno de Mánchester’, which focuses on Guardiola’s time at City and in Manchester.
A move to Etihad partly didn’t take shape because the keeper’s partner couldn’t enrol at the University of Manchester.
Having failed to sign Ter Stegen, the Citizens ended up taking Bravo, who after a year was replaced by Ederson.
Bravo’s exit from Barca allowed Ter Stegen to feature regularly and Sport adds the ex-Gladbach player has shown over the years ‘there has been no doubt about who is the owner of the Barça goal’.
