Everton have been strongly linked with a move for Algerian international Rachid Ghezzal.
The 24-year-old has just another year left on his contract at Lyon, and hasn’t agreed a new deal so far.
In fact, last week we covered claims from France that Everton had already agreed a fee of €11m with Lyon for Ghezzal, and it was down to the player.
Last night, RMC Sport revealed Ghezzal has turned down Everton’s offer after considering it for a while, and has a contract renewal offer on his table with a good pay raise.
French newspaper L’Equipe have confirmed the same on Tuesday. They say Ghezzal ‘informed the leaders’ of Everton yesterday that he’d be turning them down, despite receiving a ‘substantial financial offer’.
The main reason for turning down the offer is the lack of European football at Goodison Park. Ghezzal now wants to renew his deal at the Ligue 1 club, but those negotiations are complicated.
Perhaps Ghezzal just needs the financial offer to be more substantial. Everton need to work out if that’s the case, and if so if he’s worth it, but don’t want to be dragged into a domestic situation between Ghezzal and Lyon, just being used to help the player get a better extension.
