During the international break just ended, Thomas Vermaelen refused to talk about transfer.
There had been rumours of a possible return to Belgium with Anderlecht, but Vermaelen said the last time he spoke about a move, in October, he’d been left regretting it.
Vermaelen had told DH: “The board told me they needed four centre-backs. I didn’t have a choice but to stay. Clubs tried until the very last day, like Everton, but it was impossible. I wasn’t even able to negotiate.”
That received a quizzical, and slightly mocking response from some in the Spanish media. It was thought there was no way Barcelona would have ignored efforts from Everton and others, especially if they were good offers and persistent.
Still not playing a part for Barcelona this season, Vermaelen’s importance has risen due to Mascherano’s recent injury. But, despite that, he’s still set for the push next summer.
Marca reckon that given Barcelona’s huge wage bill, Vermaelen will be allowed to leave for nothing. Zilch, a free transfer opportunity for Everton and others.
That would see Barcelona give up the final year of Vermaelen’s contract.
