Feyenoord goalkeeper Mikki van Sas has insisted he does not consider his time at Manchester City as a failure, despite not making it to the first team at the club.
The youngster has been speaking to Algemeen Dagblad, relayed by Feyenoord Pings, after he left the Etihad for the Netherlands this summer.
The goalkeeper had been a part of Manchester City’s youth set up since a move from Utrecht U18’s in July 2020 and featured for them at various levels in the three years since.
He managed 30 appearances for their U21s, 16 for the U18s and eight for the U19 side in UEFA competition too, a hint that those in charge at the club certainly believed in his ability.
Despite that, he never made it into the Manchester City first team set up, at least not on a matchday, with training the closest he ever go to a taste of first-team football.
It was because of that he decided to move on this summer, electing to join Feyenoord on a free transfer in an attempt to kick-start his career and get back on track.
Some would consider that as something of a failure, but he is having none of that, insisting his time at the Etihad shouldn’t be viewed through that lens.
“I became champion three times with Under 18 and Under 21,” he said.
“I trained every day with the best players of my age and played two matches a week.
“I also sometimes trained with the first team, where I saw shots from Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland came at me. I have gotten better every year; how can you have failed?
“I am very happy that I am now at Feyenoord. The bigger the challenge, the better and more fun I find it. I am convinced that I can become much better and the first goalkeeper here,”
