Alaves played Athletic Club Bilbao in La Liga on Monday evening, and it was a big event for Ibai Gomez.
The Alaves attacker is a former Athletic player and they want to sign him back during the January window. AS’s Basque edition reports that Leeds United and Leicester City will have been keeping a close eye on the game, ready to pounce ahead of the January market.
Unfortunately for Gomez, AS say ‘it wasn’t his best performance’, and they’re not wrong. The whole 0-0 draw was difficult to watch, with a lack of quality and imagination from both teams.
Given that’s what Gomez is supposed to bring, it was disappointing. In their player marks, AS give him a blank, one of only three starters not thought to be worthy of even a single spade.
That’s perhaps harsh, he wasn’t stand-out bad, just one of the many who didn’t really manage to show anything.
AS report the player ‘awaits his future’ to see what will happen over the next few weeks.
With Leeds and others ready to pounce, and Alaves still wanting a renewal, it’s going to be an interesting time.
