Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen has played down links to Burnley, but admitted there was concrete negotiations in the summer transfer window.
Verbruggen was heavily linked with a move to Turf Moor throughout the summer as manager Vincent Kompany turned his eye to Belgium in his efforts to reshape the squad he had inherited.
A deal never happened as Anderlecht refused to let the goalkeeper go and Burnley didn’t up their offers in an attempt to convince them to do so.
The interest was there, though, and Burnley have continued to be linked with a potential move in the coming months should they be promoted to the Premier League as expected.
In fact, a report six days ago made it clear that they are expected to return with a bid in the summer as they look for competition for Arijanet Muric and Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
That would not be a surprising move, with Verbruggen insisting that there were concrete negotiations over a potential move to Turf Moor.
“It is true that there were concrete negotiations,” Voetbalkrant report him saying.
“But in the end no agreement was found. And I am happy about that. A departure was always a plan B.
“Although it was a disappointment to then not be the first choice at RSC Anderlecht after all. I’m not going to lie about that.
“I’ve also said that to the people on the board. I can’t sit on the bench until I’m twenty-four, lol. I had to play. Here or elsewhere.”
