Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs has been praised for his derby performance against Newcastle United on Sunday.
The Black Cats sealed a 1-0 win over Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light. The Magpies had two of their four shots on target but weren’t able to get past Roefs.
Former Manchester United star Jaap Stam analyses Sunderland’s latest win for Viaplay.
Stam is pleased with the Dutchman’s performance yesterday and Algemeen Dagblad have relayed his comments.
“Not because he’s Dutch, but he looked so incredibly calm. What he showed today was phenomenal,” he said.
If there’s one who can share an expert view on the goalkeeper, it’s former Manchester United stopper Peter Schmeichel.
He was part of the Viaplay panel and agrees with Stam’s analysis of the Sunderland star. The Dane also points out how the 22-year-old was able to ease pressure off the Black Cats defenders.
“He looked fantastic. He’s so calm. Really, under the pressure today, he remained calm,” Schmeichel explained.
“He came out well in the penalty area and was perhaps a bit unlucky when he landed awkwardly at the end. Otherwise, he remained composed throughout the match.
“He was excellent on the ball. And when he had to come out to crosses, he did. That took a lot of pressure off the defence. I’m really impressed with him.”
Sunderland signing looking like a bargain
Sunderland invested €10.5m when signing the youngster in August. Roefs has enjoyed a good run with Régis Le Bris’ side, keeping five clean sheets and conceding 17 goals from 16 league matches.
Last week, analyst Johan Derksen explained his surprise that clubs such as Ajax and PSV Eindhoven missed out on him. Schmeichel joined the chorus to praise the Sunderland summer arrival. He says Roefs can become one of the best signings of this season.
“Sunderland paid around €10m. With that, he could easily become one of the signings of the season,” he added.
