Manchester City are eyeing a move for Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric when his contract expires next summer.

That’s according to Catalan newspaper El Nacional, who say Pep Guardiola considers him the ‘ideal midfielder’.

They explain that, despite having won everything with Manchester City, minus the Champions League, the Spanish coach is still to find his perfect central midfielder.

While he has Kevin De Bruyne, he is more of an attacking midfielder than anything, while the likes of Rodrigo, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva haven’t filled what he’s looking for.

Guardiola wants another player like Sergio Busquets, a man who can bring ‘balance’ to the middle of the park.

That is why he is now ‘considering again’ a move for Modric, who he believes could still play an important role despite his age.

The 36-year-old is a player Guardiola has liked for some time, and they are now considering offering him a contract when he’s available on a free next year.

Modric has always wanted to end his career in the USA, and Manchester City are willing to offer that to him by providing a contract starting at the Etihad but ending at New York City in the MLS.

That’s a situation that could suit everyone involved. Guardiola would get the player he’s long wanted, and Modric would eventually end up in America as he’s planned.

Of course, whether there’s any truth to the idea remains to be seen, particularly as this is from a Catalan paper, and their love of stirring up trouble at Madrid is well known.

That latter fact makes us doubt the rumour at this point, but even City have been known to eye a bargain down the years, so there may be something to it.
