Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister has revealed he initially thought Jurgen Klopp was leaving the club immediately after mis-interpreting a message from Mohamed Salah.

The Argentine has been speaking to TyC Sports about Klopp’s shock decision and the squad’s response.

Klopp is set to leave Anfield at the end of the season after deciding to step away from his position a year before the end of his current contract.

The decision certainly left many in shock, with most having expected the German coach to see out his contract until 2025 and continue to lead Liverpool until that point.

The decision had reportedly been on the cards since November last year, when Klopp reportedly decided the time had come to step away from the job while he was in the midst of planning for the upcoming summer transfer window.

It seems, though, he did not share his plans with anyone in the Liverpool squad, with Mac Allister revealing they learned of their manager’s departure just minutes before he announced it to the world.

“People can’t believe it,” he said.

“The moment was a bit crazy. We found out five minutes before it was publicly known in an unusual meeting. I was sitting next to (Mohamed) Salah, I asked him, and he told me ‘the coach is leaving’.

“I thought he was leaving at that moment, but after he told us, I understood that it was when the season was ending. It’s a personal decision.

“He has been here for many years, and we want the best for him. This motivated us much more because we have to make it very special. His departure has to be very nice.”
