Tottenham Hotspur star Pedro Porro has admitted he’s hoping for two good pieces of news at the end of this season; Spurs staying up and a call-up to the Spain squad for the World Cup.
Cadena SER report comments from the 26-year-old today following an appearance on radio show El Larguero.
Tottenham survival takes precedence
The defender’s focus is currently on Premier League survival. Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Monday evening left them continuing to look over their shoulders.
Roberto de Zerbi’s side are 17th in the table at this moment in time. They sit two points ahead of West Ham in 18th place. A win over Leeds on Monday would have put them four clear of the Hammers, and potentially with their destiny in their own hands.
Instead, they face the prospect of dropping back into the relegation zone as West Ham play before they do next.
The battle to stay up will, likely, go to the final day of the season. And Pedro Porro is more than aware of that fact.
“On the one hand, we want the season to end, but on the other, we have to work until the very end. There’s no other option,” he said.
“We have to finish in the best way possible. It’s true that right now we’re two points above them and they play before us. Now anything goes. We have to consider everything. That’s the reality and everything counts.”
World Cup blocked out
The Tottenham defender is determined to ensure nobody thinks he’s not focused on the relegation battle.
The full back is likely to be included in Luis de la Fuente’s extended Spanish call-up ahead of the World Cup this summer. That would be a major bonus at the end of a very difficult season.
And while he admits it would be good news, alongside keeping Tottenham up, he’s only focused on what comes week by week.
“Hopefully, that would be two pieces of good news,” he added.
Asked about his future, the defender made clear it’s open.
“I already have enough on my plate without thinking about that now,” Porro said. “The future is next week.”
In March, Porro spoke about a transfer to Real Madrid being his dream. However, the media around Los Blancos didn’t really push that idea after being given the prompt.
