Italian journalist Carlo Pelegatti thinks AC Milan should sign Crystal Palace star Jean-Philippe Mateta. And he’s going to push the idea as much as possible.
That’s at least if his latest comments are anything to go by. Milan News cover him today as he continues to push the transfer idea in Italy.
Pelegatti was busy suggesting the Crystal Palace star as a signing for AC Milan this week. That came after Atalanta had also been linked with a potential move. He named Mateta as his favourite option to solve Milan’s current striker issues.
He’s insistent that Milan need to bolster their attack in the January transfer window. And he wants Mateta to be the one targets. In fact, he thinks there’s a deal there to be done involving Milan striker Santiago Gimenez as well.
“While looking for a potential striker for Milan to sign in January, there’s a player named Mateta, 1.92 m tall, 28 years old, a French international, who scored a goal against Azerbaijan,” he said.
“He plays for Crystal Palace, costing between €25 and €30 million, a classic penalty area man. We’re not interested in outfield players; we already have them. Pay attention to this suggestion of mine, I’ll try to investigate, but we need to break the bank.
“We can’t yet go after Vogt, for example, a prospect who could arrive at the end of the year, and he certainly won’t strengthen Milan right now. Mateta, on the other hand, is ready to be placed at San Siro, it couldn’t be better.
“Plus, Crystal Palace might be interested in a player like Gimenez. I have nothing against Gimenez, but I’m missing a player like Mateta. He could be the perfect signing for Milan.”
Now, we think that’s wishful thinking of the extreme from Pelegatti. Why Crystal Palace would ever swap Mateta, their star man at this point, for a striker struggling for goals, is anyone’s guess.
They certainly wouldn’t be interested in doing it in January either. Particularly when they’re already facing the prospect of losing Marc Guehi as well.
Pelegatti is pushing the idea, though, and certainly thinks there’s something to it. We’ll wait for something more than wishful thinking before getting too excited.
