Fenerbahçe are positioning themselves to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr should Spurs drop into the Championship.
Fotomaç report that talks are already underway with the 23-year-old about a move to Türkiye this summer. That’s after he was re-added to the list earlier this month.
Fenerbahçe’s midfield overhaul
Fotomaç explain that the Istanbul giants are preparing a significant rebuild in their midfield this summer. Key decisions have already been made in that regard.
Fred and İsmail Yüksek have been placed on the transfer list, while the club will not activate the purchase option for Edson Álvarez from West Ham United.
That will leave multiple vacancies in midfield. Pape Matar Sarr is now one of the priorities to fill that gap.
First round of talks
According to Fotomaç’s information, initial negotiations have already taken place with the Tottenham midfielder’s intermediaries.
Fenerbahçe see Pape Matar Sarr as a high-upside signing who fits the club’s long-term profile. A crucial factor is that Sarr is expected to leave Tottenham if the club are relegated. That’s a scenario Fenerbahçe are watching closely.
The Turkish side believe that could significantly lower the barriers to a deal. Club officials are preparing to move from exploratory talks to formal negotiations in the coming days.
Sarr is currently valued at €32m, but Fenerbahçe hope that can be reduced significantly. They are willing to spend as they value Sarr’s athleticism, ball-winning and ability to drive the team forward.
Tottenham relegation key for Pape Matar Sarr
It all depends on Tottenham’s Premier League status, though. If they go down, Fenerbahçe will move quickly to try and secure a favourable deal for the midfielder.
For now, it seems they are simply moving in the background and preparing the ground for a potential assault. Talks are already underway with the midfielder’s entourage about a potential move.
If the conditions work in their favour, it seems they will be keen to take advantage of Tottenham’s worse case scenario to start their summer rebuild.
