Marcel Sabitzer’s two goals against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League have led to endless rumours about Spurs interest in the RB Leipzig player, and he’s not exactly been trying to kill them.
Having spoken about it several times, Sabitzer has now granted a big interview to SportBild, in which he, yes that’s right, talks about it again. Indeed, so much of the interview is about Tottenham interest, that it feels to be the whole purpose of it.
First off, he’s asked if he’s ‘already’ spoken to Jose Mourinho about it all, to which he grinned and said: “Why do you think I’d answer?”
He then continued: “Football lives on rumours. And when you deliver good international games, it is normal for something like this to arise and interest to be expressed. But now I only focus on the tasks that come and above all, I want to end the season first, that has top priority. And then let’s see how things are.”
Then asked if he’s honoured by the rumours, presumably the Spurs ones, he replied: “It is definitely a confirmation of the performance you are showing. It’s good, it’s fun right now. That’s why I would have loved to continue after the Tottenham games. But I’ll keep trying as best I can.”
SportBild were in full transfer mode (again suggesting this was the whole point of the interview), and asked Sabitzer if he ‘dreams’ of the Premier League: “Oh, I’m basically open to everything. I have nothing to rule out. We will see.”
“I was thrilled by the atmosphere in the stadium. How the spectators read the game and celebrate the individual scenes, the fans really know about football. There was sometimes a tackle celebrated, sometimes a diagonal ball. I like to watch the Premier League and imagine that playing there is fun.”
Rumours of Tottenham interest haven’t felt like they’re based on a great deal, other than the player’s performances against them. There’s been no serious claims of offers being prepared or anything like that, but it seems increasingly clear that it’s something Sabitzer is keen on.
