Jose Mourinho could be about to beat former club Tottenham to the signing of Hoffenheim midfielder Florian Grillitsch.
That’s according to Corriere Dello Sport, who say the midfielder is ‘one step away’ from joining the Italian side.
Grillitsch is available on a free transfer next summer when his contract with the German side is set to expire.
He will be free to enter negotiations regarding a pre-contract agreement come January, although there is also the prospect he will move during the winter transfer window as well.
That is the likely scenario, with Hoffenheim sure to push for a transfer to gain any money they can rather than losing the player on a free.
They’ve actually held a longstanding interest in the Austrian midfielder, with reports all the way back in 2018 stating they had their eye on him.
That seemingly remains the case, and the fact he could be an ‘absolute bargain’ had brought them back around.
Roma were also said to be on the scene, and it appears they may have jumped ahead, with Corriere reporting that Grillitsch is ‘one step away’ from joining them.
He’s reportedly the ‘favourite’ to replace Bryan Cristante and Jordan Veretout, and hand Jose Mourinho the midfielder he’s been looking for since the summer.
That could put an end to Tottenham’s hopes of getting their man, a double blow considering it would be their former manager who is beating them to his signature.
