Anyone who watched Everton last season will know that one of their better players was Ben Godfrey.

The defender arrived in a surprise summer move from Norwich City, with the Blues paying £24.75m to bring him to Goodison Park.

That quickly proved to be a smart piece of business, with Godfrey establishing himself in the first team with a series of impressive performances at left-back and centre-back across the campaign.

He is very highly rated by everyone at Everton, and now it seems he’s earning surprise attention in Europe as well.

Corriere Dello Sport cover the situation at Everton today after their impressive start to life under Rafa Benitez, and Godfrey is singled out for praise.

They explain how several factors have worked for the Blues so far, from Richarlison, the ‘artist’ to the ‘regenerated’ Calvert-Lewin and the excellent performances from Demarai Gray.

Another factor that has been key to the ‘brilliant start’ is Godfrey, according to the newspaper, who say that Benitez sees him as ‘extra leader’ on the pitch labelling him ‘one of the secrets’ at Everton.

Why they think that isn’t exactly clear, but they clearly think that the Toffees have something of a gem on their hands.

That, of course, is something the fans in the stands are already aware of, but attention now appears to be spreading out, and it’s nice to get praise from an unexpected source.
