The Italian media keep beating the same Gonzalo Higuain-Alvaro Morata drum, and the fact they’re all at it suggests there might be something to it.
On Tuesday, we covered claims from Gazzetta dello Sport that AC Milan were strongly considering making a move for the Spaniard, whose exit from Stamford Bridge would be ideal for Maurizio Sarri, allowing the new manager to bring in one of his favourite pupils: the Juventus striker.
This is, in essence, what Corriere dello Sport are also reporting on Wednesday, claiming that while Roman Abramovich doesn’t normally like the idea of players over the age of 30 coming to his club, he’s ready to make an exception (again, after Olivier Giroud) for Higuain.
The fee would be €60m, and Chelsea wouldn’t have any issue paying his wages, as he’d likely ask for a similar package to the one he’s on in Turin (around €7.5m/year).
As for Alvaro Morata, the new Milan owners, Elliott Management, have given the green light to go for the former Real Madrid forward, expecting to have to pay around €65-70m to get him after Chelsea’s original €80m expenditure last summer.
It’s a scenario where everyone wins, really: Juventus get some of their Cristiano Ronaldo money back, the Blues and Sarri get the striker they want while making a €5-10m ‘profit’ by selling Morata to Milan who desperately want a marquee striker after the Nicola Kalinic and André Silva flops.
