After spending a few months without a club following his departure from Manchester United, in October, Sergio Romero finally signed a one-year deal with Serie A side Venezia.
The 34-year-old has now made a few appearances for the Italians, as he tries to put his career back on track after a long time without playing.
Romero has been interviewed for Gazzetta dello Sport’s radio channel, and had a few words about one of Serie A’s biggest stars, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. They shared the dressing room at Manchester United, and the goalkeeper revealed some nice words he heard from the Swedish striker.
“Ibra is a true champion, for all that this word means,” Romero told Gazzetta dello Sport (via FC Inter 1908).
“At United we challenged each other in the shots on goal, as well as free-kicks: he always had something right to say to his teammates, to make his mentality understood and conveyed.
“He always told us that the intensity and desire we put into training we’d then find it in the match. One day we even fought a little but afterwards he came to me and said: ‘This is what I want from you and from the others, you have South American blood and you understand faster. You will see that at the end of the season we will win something’. He was right.”
Romero refers to the Europa League title won by Manchester United in 2017. The Argentina goalkeeper started for the Red Devils for that whole campaign, while Ibrahimovic missed the semifinals and final due to a knee injury.
In their time together, the duo also won the League Cup and Community Shield for the Red Devils.
