Ajax defender Calvin Bassey has insisted he was sorry to hurt his friends at Rangers in their recent 4-0 win.

The Dutch side kicked off their Champions League Group A campaign in fine fashion last week, with a comprehensive victory over Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side.

Goals from Edson Alvarez, Steven Berghuis and Mohammed Kudus had the Eredivisie champions 3-0 within in 33 minutes, with Steven Bergwijn adding a fourth in the 80th minute.

It was a chastening evening for Rangers, who were never truly in the game and fortunate not to be beaten by a bigger scoreline.

Part of the Ajax line-up was defender Calvin Bassey, who swapped Rangers for the Dutch giants this summer in a £20.7m deal.

He’s been a regular for them since and was delighted with his first experience of Champions League football, although he didn’t particularly enjoy getting one over his Ibrox friends.

“I consider the players of Rangers FC as my friends,” Soccer Niuews report him saying.

“I have played with them for two years, shared joys and sorrows. And it’s not easy to hurt friends so much. But for me personally, and my family, it was a brilliant night.

“When I opened my eyes again, I was really standing there. Those are happy moments.

“I will never forget this day. During the lap of honour, the supporters in the stands shouted for my shirt. But this is my first Champions League shirt. I’ll frame that. This is one of the best days of my life, or at least of my career.”
