Clearly frustrated with his side’s loss to Manchester United at the weekend, Oliver Glasner sent a very public transfer message.
The Crystal Palace manager shared his annoyance at what he believes was a lack of transfer action in the summer window. With the Eagles winning the FA Cup and subsequently qualifying for European football, the Austrian had clearly expected to be backed to a greater degree.
Glasner somewhat dismissed the idea of January arrivals making all the difference.
Instead, he doubled down on a missed chance in the summer.
Messages to Crystal Palace board on transfers
The manager often speaks to the Austrian media, indeed it’s usually when he’s most candid. At the end of July, he shared his transfer irritation: “Even though all the players are still here, we haven’t made the most of the transfer window so far. I was promised that we would be more active and bring in the new players earlier this year.
“As of now, I have 17 outfield players! I hope we don’t lose any more. If that happens and we get four new ones on deadline day like last year, another false start is possible.”
He’d been speaking to Kronen Zeitung, who were clear Glasner was ‘addressing the club’s owners’.
Speaking to the Austrian media again in August, the manager doubled down.
When asked his aims for Crystal Palace’s season, Glasner said it depended on incomings and outgoings: “That obviously depends on how the transfer window goes. If you constantly lose your best players and don’t replace them accordingly, it will be difficult to maintain or even improve your level. Except for the first eight match days, we finished at least seventh for the rest of last season. If that’s possible, I can’t think of any reasons why we couldn’t achieve that for the entire season.”
Clearly, Oliver Glasner, whose contract expires at the end of this season, doesn’t feel he’s had enough backing.
