Oli McBurnie’s move to Las Palmas is one of the more interesting moves of the summer transfer window, with him deciding not to renew with Sheffield United despite training with them after his contract expired.
We previously covered a report from Canarias7 which stated the player rejected more money from elsewhere because he was excited about joining the Spanish side.
He’s now opened up about the move and how he is already in the right shape to make an impact right away for Los Amarillos.
The striker spoke to La Provincia about the transfer, explaining that he had pre-season training with Sheffield United, making him fully ready for action.
He said: “I did the entire pre-season with Sheffield United and I feel physically ready. Ready to have a direct impact on the team right away. I am a forward and I see myself as a classic attacker, in the old style.”
He was also asked how the move came about and he said that he first heard about interest from Las Palmas a few weeks back and was intrigued by it.
“I found out about UD’s interest about three weeks ago and we started the negotiations. We contacted the sports management and I spoke to everyone. It was very fast. Now I am very excited to be here.”
McBurnie also stated that he hasn’t set a specific target for goals for himself, but he only wants to contribute as much as he can.
“I do not promise a certain number of goals. I will focus on helping the team in everything I can to win matches. My mission is to contribute.”
The 28-year-old wasn’t always a starter for Sheffield United in the 2023/24 season but still managed to score six goals. His future was always going to be in doubt this summer due to his contract situation, yet his switch to Las Palmas was certainly unexpected.
