With a 4-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Thursday evening, Newcastle United took another important step towards a place in the Champions League next season.
Today, Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte features some quotes from Bruno Guimarães, who scored the Magpies’ last goal in injury time.
The midfielder talked about how happy he was with Newcastle’s win, claiming the club are now closer to their objective for this season.
“Happy to score again, but mainly for winning the three points. May we close this season with a golden key and with the objective completed: to put Newcastle back in the Champions League,” Bruno Guimarães told Globo Esporte.
“It is our obsession and we will spare no effort to make it happen. It will be important for the city, the fans and for the long-term project of the club.”
Bruno Guimarães also urged Newcastle to stay focused for their final two games in the Premier League, keeping up with the attitude they had against Brighton.
“It was a fundamental victory for our goal of qualifying for the Champions League. A result other than victory would complicate things for us in the last rounds. We managed to get in the spirit that the game needed and we controlled the actions from the first minute. A performance that matches the season we did. Focus on the next game that will have the same weight as this one.”
Currently standing third in the Premier League table, Newcastle are four points above Liverpool, who are fifth. That means the Magpies only need a win in those two games to guarantee their place in the Champions League, but it would also be interesting to hold their position against Manchester United, who are fourth and stand three points behind.
The Magpies will be facing Leicester City, who are fighting against relegation, at St. James’ Park on Monday. Then the last game of their season will be played against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the 28th.
