West Ham United‘s Edson Álvarez will return to the Premier League side after his loan spell at Fenerbahçe.

The Mexico international joined the Turkish club in August 2025, when José Mourinho was in charge.

A few days later, Fenerbahçe parted ways with him and appointed Domenico Tedesco as his successor. The latter, who left in April, didn’t utilise the West Ham man regularly.

The midfielder played 1,126 minutes from 18 matches for the Yellow Canaries. Multiple injuries also had an impact on his game time, and he underwent surgery in February and only returned to the pitch earlier this month.

Last month, Sport Witness covered claims from Mexico that Fenerbahçe won’t retain him. The same source stated he won’t return to his country and has a firm desire to continue in Europe for few years.

Fenerbahçe’s plans for West Ham man confirmed

The Istanbul club had agreed a purchase option as part of the loan deal.

Mexico manager Javier Aguirre now confirms they have decided not to exercise this clause and Marca have relayed his comments.

“The new coach told him he wasn’t counting on him, and from then on… he belongs to the club,” he said.

“His contract is with West Ham… Fenerbahçe won’t exercise their purchase option, and he’s focused on the World Cup.”

There were also suggestions of disciplinary issues with the West Ham United owned player. The national team boss addressed that and provided an update on the 28-year-old’s fitness.

“He’s healthy, strong, he’s a man who has given a lot to this national team. In my opinion, he didn’t commit any act of indiscipline,” Aguirre explained.

“The new coach told him, ‘You’re not going to play the rest of the season’, but it wasn’t due to any act of indiscipline, believe me, because I’m very aware of it.”

What next for West Ham man

Edson Álvarez will return to the Premier League side, where he is unlikely to stay if they were to drop to the Championship.

The World Cup provides the former Ajax man an opportunity to attract potential suitors and also improve his value. If not, he has to stay with West Ham United next season.
